Go West Diving

Due to its proximity to the West point of the island, the reef is mostly hard corals and usually teeming with hundreds of types of fish. The regal King Neptune watches over his underwater kingdom at the top of the drop-off, and is a must-do photo opp. Accessed via a working fishermen’s beach, you’re almost guaranteed to see turtles, chowing down on the leftovers from the fishermen’s catch. If you’re lucky, you may see trigger fish and larger pelagics, more common on the wild North side, and pretty rare on the protected South side. Easy walk into the ocean from the parking lot, via the sand-rubble beach. Booty fins recommended.

Playa Piskado, also called Playa Grandi, is a crowd puller. Turtles can be found on the top of the reef and near the small pier, where they get the leftovers of the fishermen to eat. The beautiful reef is further out and at 8 meters depth you can find a statue of the sea god Neptune.

Playa Kalki with the dive site “Alice in Wonderland“ is the most north-western dive site which is possible from shore. A beautiful reef runs parallel to the beach with large coral formations. The best diving depth is between 5-20m.Parking, restaurant, toilets and diving school are on site.

Playa Forti is famous for the nice view. A staircase leads to the beach and there is a normal shore entrance. The reef a little further out has beautiful corals and rock formations. You can also find many sea creatures along the cliff and discover a lot.

The best dive site on the west side of Curaçao, only accessible by boat. At both sides of the gorgeous hard coral reef are two sandy patches filled with large soft corals. The massive hard coral reef starts at 5m / 15ft and gently drops to 20 m/70 ft where it becomes a sandy bottom.

Discover what is now one of the coolest and most talked about experiences in the entire Caribbean. Located next to Mushroom Forest at the end of a one kilometer stretch of land in the Santa Cruz area of Banda Abou, you will find a small opening at water level that could be passed by easily without thinking too much about it. ​This is the perfect place for off-gassing between dives or a snorkel trip and it is located next to Mushroom Forest. But the story of the Blue Room begins not as a dive site. It originally appealed to antsy divers as a perfect place to go off-gas between scuba forays into the nearby Mushroom Forest and is easily explored by snorkelers and once you duck under the narrow opening, the small cavern opens-up to an air-filled chamber, complete with tiny bats. Only about 20-feet deep, it was a perfect jaunt between dives, and a good breath could take almost anyone to the bottom. ​Once you start to talk about light, magic, and wonder – soon you’ve got professional photographers asking about it. This was the moment that a tiny, air-filled chamber mostly enjoyed by snorkelers between dives, went from a West End novelty to a West End must-dive. Underwater photographers discovered the Blue Room. The first famous name to capture the Blue Room was world acclaimed wildlife photographer Amos Nachoum back in 2006 while on a photo expedition with then Sport Diver Editor, Ty Sawyer. Amos Nachoum is a light wrangler and the Blue Room was nirvana for the Photographer, Explorer, and Conservationist. No big animals, but big experience in an intimate space. And, if you ask him today, he’ll list the Blue Room among his favorite dive experiences in the Caribbean, not just Curaçao. He described the light in the Blue Room as “perfect” according to Ty. And, in the late days of August through September, the Blue Room fills with silversides, which light up the cavern as they move and flow like mercury. Now, more than just an afterthought, The Blue Room is an essential Curaçao experience. And, that light, unforgettable.
