During the winter months Honolua Bay gets some of the big waves that make Maui famous, the waves that surfers love also bring nutrient dense water into the reef keeping it healthy. In the summer months, and on special winter occasions, Honolua Bay is a must. The coral formations are exceptional, you’re bound to see some large turtles, and mantas are even spotted in certain seasons.

I live on Maui, have dived in Kihei at Ulua Beach, Makena Landing, White Rock etc. and Honolua Bay is INFINITELY better if you want to see a huge reef with giant coral and large schools of fish. We saw 3 turtles one right after the other and hundreds of fish of probably 50+ different species. I rarely see turtles in Kihei and rarely see large amounts of fish too. It is more of a drive, but Honolua Bay is 100% worth it. Be prepared for a tricky entry though. To get to the shoreline, you park on the other side of some woods and walk on a smooth dirt trail for 10 minutes with all your gear (it's hot!). The beach itself is all rocks around 1ft in diameter - there is no sand. To get in the water with all your gear on, I recommend sitting down and really slowly scooting in on your knees, behind, or stomach. 100% worth it - will be diving again.
